For Solar Installers

DC Arc Flash Is Still Arc Flash. Wash Your FR Like It.

Roof tar, sealant, panel silicone, roof dust, and eight hours of sweat in full sun. Then it goes in with a detergent full of softener and brighteners — on arc-rated gear you're wearing around energized DC strings.

Blackwater cuts roof soil and set-in sweat odor in one cycle, and it's formulated without bleach, optical brighteners, or silicone softeners — the three additives that degrade FR fabric.

  • Roof tar, sealant, silicone, dust, and all-day sweat
  • Safe on arc-rated FR worn for DC work
  • Kills set-in sweat odor without perfume
  • Safe on hi-vis reflective tape

What You're Actually Fighting

Three Things Killing Your Gear.

None of them are solved by a stronger scent.

02

Roof Tar & Sealant

Bitumen, butyl, and panel silicone bond to fabric and smear when warm — and on a roof in July, everything is warm.

03

Sweat That Sets In

Full-sun work means salt and skin oil driven deep into the weave every day. That's protein soil — it needs enzymes, not fragrance.

04

Softener On Arc-Rated Gear

Solar is electrical work. If you wear arc-rated FR, softener and brightener residue is the quiet way that rating gets compromised in your own laundry room.

Solar work is electrical work — and your FR knows it

Plenty of solar crews wear arc-rated clothing because module strings carry serious DC voltage long before anything is energized on the AC side. If your employer issues arc-rated FR, the laundry rules that apply to any electrical trade apply to you.

The protection lives in the fabric and its treatment. Residue left on that fabric works against it, which is why the three most common laundry-aisle additives are the three to avoid.

The three to leave out

  • Chlorine bleach — attacks fibers and shortens garment life.
  • Optical brighteners — deposit residue to change how light reflects; they do not clean.
  • Fabric softener and dryer sheets — leave a coating that traps soil and sits on gear designed not to ignite.

Getting roof tar and sealant out

Bitumen, butyl tape residue, and panel silicone all behave the same way: they smear when warm and set when cool.

  1. Let the spot cool and harden — do not work it hot.
  2. Break away what lifts cleanly.
  3. Apply degreaser directly, working outside-in so the edge does not spread.
  4. Wait 5–10 minutes, then wash warm.
  5. Air dry and inspect before any dryer heat.

Set-in sweat is a different soil

Roof work in full sun drives salt and skin oil deep into the weave every single day. That is protein soil, and it needs enzymes and real surfactants — not fragrance layered on top. A shirt that smells fine in the closet and turns an hour into the shift was never actually clean.

What this product does not do

No detergent restores, confers, or guarantees the arc rating or flame resistance of a garment. Blackwater is formulated to avoid damaging the FR treatment already in your gear. Follow your garment care label and your employer's PPE policy.

Solar Questions.

Can I use this on arc-rated FR?

Yes. Blackwater contains no chlorine bleach, optical brighteners, or silicone-based fabric softeners — the additives that degrade FR fabric.

To be clear: no detergent restores or confers an arc rating or flame resistance. Blackwater is built not to damage the treatment already in your garment. Follow your care label and employer PPE policy.

How do I get roof tar off my work pants?

Let the spot cool and harden first — working it warm just spreads it. Break away what lifts, apply the Degreaser directly working outside-in, wait 5–10 minutes, then wash warm and air dry before any heat.

My shirts smell fine until I start sweating. Why?

Set-in sweat is protein soil driven into the weave. If it isn't removed, body heat releases the odor again — fragrance only delays it. Enzymes and real surfactants pull it out; for a bad week, add the Booster.

Will it hurt my hi-vis vest?

No. No bleach and no brighteners means nothing attacking the fluorescent dye or the retroreflective striping. Wash inside-out and air dry to get the most life out of the tape.

How much does it cost per wash?

About 44¢ per load — roughly 64 loads from a 32 oz bottle, or about 40¢ on Subscribe & Save.

What if it doesn't work on my gear?

30-day money-back guarantee on your first bottle.
