Field Notes

The Workwear Cleaning Guide.

Work clothes do not usually die clean deaths. They get retired because diesel odor will not quit, grease stains survive every wash, FR shirts get stiff, and Carhartt canvas turns into cardboard.

Most of that is not a gear problem. It is a laundry problem. Blackwater was built for the clothes that take the beating — mechanics' pants, FR shirts, hi-vis vests, and duck canvas jackets.

Workwear Cleaning FAQ.

Can regular detergent remove diesel smell from work clothes?

Regular detergent can help with light odor, but diesel is petroleum-based. If fuel oil remains trapped in the fabric, the smell stays. A better process uses pre-treatment, warm water, grease-cutting surfactants, and air drying before any dryer heat.

Should I wash work clothes separately?

Yes. Grease, diesel, hydraulic fluid, and jobsite grime can transfer onto normal clothes. Wash workwear separately, especially if it has petroleum contamination.

Is fabric softener bad for work clothes?

For many types of workwear, yes. Fabric softener can leave residue that traps odor, reduce absorbency, affect reflective trim, and should not be used on FR clothing.

What is the biggest mistake people make when cleaning work clothes?

Drying too soon. Heat can bake leftover oil, fuel, and grease deeper into fabric. Air dry first, inspect the garment, then rewash if needed.
