How to wash welding clothes without wrecking the FR
Most welding jackets, shirts, and bibs are flame-resistant. That protection depends on the fabric, its treatment, and how the garment is maintained — so the wash routine matters. Your care label and employer policy come first, always.
1. Knock off spatter and slag before the machine
Shake or brush hardened spatter out first. Wash it in and it grinds against the weave for the whole cycle — and lands on everything else in the load.
2. Wash weld gear separately
Keep it away from towels and linting fabrics, and away from oily shop rags that redeposit soil.
3. Pre-treat cutting oil and grease
Apply degreaser directly, work it in, wait 5–10 minutes. Oil that goes into a dryer sets.
4. Warm water, clean-rinsing detergent
Warm loosens the oil that carries smoke odor. Skip chlorine bleach, optical brighteners, and fabric softener.
5. Air dry and inspect
Air drying is easier on FR fabric. Check for thin spots, burn-through, and damaged seams before the gear goes back on the line — laundry cannot fix a garment that's spent.
Why starch is the sleeper problem
Starch, fabric softener, and dryer sheets all leave a coating behind. On flame-resistant fabric, that buildup is combustible material sitting on top of gear whose entire job is not to ignite. It's the most common way welders quietly compromise an FR jacket without ever noticing.

Getting smoke smell out for good
Smoke odor is trapped soil, not a surface smell. Pre-treat the heavy spots, wash warm with a clean-rinsing detergent, and air dry before any heat. If the smell is still there, the soil is still there — rewash with the Booster before you put it in a dryer.
